  • Head from Colombo by 6.30 am. to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to catch the 9.15 am feeding of baby elephants and stay on to see the elephants bathe in the river at 10.00 am. Enjoy a cup of Ceylon tea from one of the nearby restaurants overlooking the river as you watch these gentle giants gambol about in the water.

    After paying a visit to our long-nosed friends head on to Kandy resplendent in all its cultural glory and home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic. The daily pujas are the most atmospheric times at the temple as devotees flock to the temple with their lotus flower offerings, immerse yourself in this Sri Lankan tradition and visit the temple from 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm to experience the evening ‘Tevava’ or service. If you wish for a less crowded experience avoid the following times 5.30 am – 7.00 am, 9.30 am-11.00 am and 6.30pm – 8.00 pm. You may also catch a dance cultural dance show in the evening.

    Route: Kandy – Kitulgala – Colombo/Airport

  • Start your journey back to Colombo with a few exciting stops in between. First stop at the nearby Peradeniya botanical gardens for an early morning stroll amongst the dew laden luscious flora. Enjoy a snack at one of the nearby outlets, and then set off for Kitulgala. Known for the its whitewater rafting, satisfy the adventurer in you as you spend an hour gushing down the rapids in Kitulgala enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan meal of rice and curry afterwards and then head back to Colombo where you will be dropped back at your hotel or at the airport.

    Alternately you may consider trekking up Hanthana to enjoy the panoramic windswept vistas atop the mountain. Take a 45-minute hike to the top and have your breath taken away as you overlook the Kandy city and the rolling hill country spread out before you. Have lunch in Kandy town and get some shopping in before you head back to Colombo or the airport.

  • Head to Dambulla, and climb the Dambulla cave temple. Then stop at PalWehera for a village safari by bullock cart. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan village meal known as ‘Hath Maaluwa’ which means ‘seven curries’.

    Head back to Colombo or be dropped off at the airport in time for your flight.

If you seek a bit of a thrill, you can always go jet ski on Gregory Lake or take a hoke to Worlds End early morning. After you have enjoyed the cooler climes of ‘Little England’ head back down to Colombo or the airport. You may also consider visiting some notable water falls along the way and going for a cool but refreshing dip.

    Alternately, you may leave Nuwara Eliya a little early and travel to Colombo via Kitulgala, making a stop there for an hour of white-water rafting.
